The FBI has continued to remove employees who worked on investigations involving President Donald Trump. The firings are part of a wider personnel shake-up under Director Kash Patel. Over the last year, Patel has pushed out dozens of employees who either contributed to investigations of the president or were seen as not aligned with the administration's agenda.

The most recent round reached agents tied to the classified documents case. Associated Press sources said about ten employees who took part in the probe into Trump's handling of classified records at Mar-a-Lago were terminated. That case led to a high-profile search of the Florida property and a federal prosecution. The FBI has also fired agents who took part in a separate investigation into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Reuters reported that four agents who worked on former Special Counsel Jack Smith's team were fired, although some of those terminations were later reversed. The reversals suggest the process has been uneven. Since January, dozens of FBI agents, prosecutors and support staff tied to Smith's investigation or to January 6 cases have been dismissed from the Justice Department.

The dismissals have drawn legal and institutional pushback. The FBI Agents Association condemned the firings as unlawful and a danger to national security. Former Acting Director Brian Driscoll, who tried to shield agents from being targeted for January 6 work, sued Patel and the Justice Department after being fired, as did the former head of the Washington Field Office. One lawsuit reportedly claims the White House pressured the bureau to remove agents who handled Trump-related cases.

Supporters of the firings say the underlying investigations were improperly aimed at political opponents. Trump allies, including Senator Chuck Grassley, have alleged that the FBI's probe improperly targeted a wide range of Republicans. Critics counter that removing career investigators over the cases they worked on is retaliation. They say it could discourage agents from pursuing politically sensitive matters in the future.

Much of the reporting depends on anonymous sources, and the details may change as the lawsuits move forward and more personnel decisions emerge. For now, the firings have become a test of how far an administration can go in reshaping the agency that once investigated it, and of whether courts or Congress will step in.
